HairTryOn's face shape detector is a free browser tool that finds your face shape from one front-facing photo and suggests haircuts that suit it.
How the Face Shape Detector Works
When you tap "Agree & analyze", your browser loads a face landmark model and places a set of points around your face: the top of your forehead, your cheekbones, the corners of your jaw and the tip of your chin. From those points it measures five things: how long your face is, how wide your forehead is, how wide your cheekbones are, how wide your jaw is, and how narrow your chin gets.
It then compares those numbers with each other, not with anyone else's face. A face whose length and width are close reads as round or square, depending on how strong the jaw corners are. A face that is clearly longer than it is wide reads as oblong. When the forehead is the widest part and the chin narrows, you get heart; when the cheekbones are the widest part, diamond; when the jaw is wider than the forehead, triangle. Everything in between reads as oval.
The model finds points, not people. It doesn't recognise who you are, and the photo, the points and the result stay in this browser tab. One honest limit: the model can't see your real hairline, so the top of your forehead is an approximation, and hair over your forehead makes it rougher.
Face Shape Detector vs Measuring Tape vs Online Quiz
| Method | Time it takes | Tools needed | How subjective | Where your photo goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This face shape detector | One photo | A phone or laptop | Measures proportions the same way every time; the rules are our own | Stays in your browser |
| Measuring tape and mirror | A few minutes | Soft tape, mirror, pen | Depends on where you place the tape | No photo |
| Online quiz | A few questions | None | Depends on how you describe yourself | No photo |
Who It's For
It's for anyone about to get a haircut who wants to know their face shape first, and for anyone who wants clearer words for the conversation with their stylist. You get a shortlist, the cuts to skip and four questions to ask in the chair.
It isn't for seeing yourself with a new haircut. This version doesn't create any images of you. If that's what you need, it isn't here yet.
Limits
- A photo taken from the side, from below or with your head tilted can change the result. Look straight at the camera.
- Bangs over your forehead, hair over your jaw and thick glasses frames hide the edges the detector measures.
- Many faces sit between two shapes, such as round and oval. If the result looks wrong, pick the shape you see in the mirror.
- Face shape is only one input. Your hair type, how much time you spend styling and what you like matter just as much.

Find My Face Shape — FreeFace Shape Detector FAQ
Is this face shape detector free?
Yes. The face shape check, the full haircut list and the questions for your stylist cost nothing, and you don't need an account. Paid photo try-ons may come later as one-time packs with no subscription. For now they are marked "coming soon", and nothing on this site asks for payment details.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo is analyzed in your browser and is never uploaded or stored by us. It is cleared when you close the page or tap "Try another photo". We use Google Analytics to count page visits and button clicks, but your photo, facial landmarks and face shape are never sent with that data.
How accurate is a face shape detector?
It's an estimate. The detector measures proportions from facial landmarks and sorts them into one of seven shapes using rules we set ourselves, and those rules haven't been checked against expert ratings. Camera angle, hair over your forehead or jaw, and lighting can change the result. If it looks wrong, tap "Not you? Pick your shape" and choose the one you see in the mirror.
What if I get two face shapes?
That's common. Many faces sit between two shapes, such as round and oval. Run a second photo taken straight on in good light, then compare both lists. Styles that show up for both shapes are a sensible place to start. You can switch shapes with "Not you? Pick your shape" without uploading again.
Does it work for men?
Yes, the face shape check works the same for any face. The haircut list leans toward cuts like bobs, bangs and long layers, so men will get more from the face shape itself and the stylist questions. A beard can hide your jawline, so use a clean-shaven photo or one with a short beard. The face shape hairstyles guide has a short section for men.
Will it show me with the new haircut?
Not yet. This version doesn't create any images: it gives you your face shape, a list of haircuts that suit it, and the cuts to skip. Putting styles on your own photo is coming soon as a one-time paid pack, with no subscription. Nothing is for sale today, and you won't be asked to pay.
